Energy Saving Tips

You may use the home energy analysis tool to help you in finding ways to conserve energy. If you just want to quickly find out approximately how much electricity an appliance or another item uses, you may use the appliance calculator.  The list below is provided for general tips on saving energy.

  • Turn things off/unplug when not in use
  • Lower the thermostat on a water heater to 120° F
  • Make sure that all windows and doors seal tightly
  • Plug electronics such as TV's, DVD's, cable boxes, etc. into a power strip and turn the strip off when the electronics are not in use
  • Air dry clothes or when using a dryer, dry multiple loads consecutively to reduce warm-up and dry times
  • Change furnace filters monthly
  • Purchase Energy Star® labeled products
  • Caulk or spray foam gaps and cracks
  • During the heating season, turn the thermostat down when nobody is home
  • When using a dishwasher, air dry the dishes rather than using the dry cycle on the dishwasher
  • Wash only full loads of laundry
  • Clean the coils on refrigerators
  • Use space heaters only when necessary
  • Check insulation levels
  • Install a programmable thermostat
  • Keep the refrigerator temperature at approximately 36-38 degrees
  • Remove lint from the dryer lint screen
  • Have your heating and cooling systems inspected regularly
  • During cooling season increase the temperature when nobody is home
  • If using a fireplace, make sure the damper seals properly
